His peers have recognized Michael Neils for his contributions to the advancement of the lighting profession, including:

• Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers - “1988 Second Prize Paper Award” of the Production and Application of Light Committee, for the paper entitled “Specifying Energy Efficiency in Fluorescent Fixtures”, presented at the 1988 Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, PA.
• Illuminating Engineering Society, “Special Presidential Citation”, for organizing effective input from the California lighting community to the California Energy Commission in the 1985 revision of the New Non-Residential Building Energy Standards (Title 24).  Presented at the IES Annual Conference, Detroit, July 1985.
• Illuminating Engineering Society, South Pacific Coast Region, “In Recognition of Outstanding Contributions to the Society and to the Lighting Profession”.  Presented at the IES Regional Conference, Las Vegas, June 1990.
